A Muslim cleric, Sheik Yusuf Amzat-Salam, 35, his wife and four children were killed by hoodlums in the early hours of Tuesday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun. The killings occurred at Atiba area of Odogbolu Local Government Area. It was gathered that the eldest child, a girl, was aged 11, followed by her twin brothers, aged 8 and the last female child, aged 2. All the victims had since been buried accordance to Muslim rites amid wailing. The attackers, whose motive could not be ascertained, butchered the entire household with machetes. Investigation revealed that the victims were discovered in the pool of their blood when a school bus came to pick the children. Diane Aluska, 55, of Lindenhurst, New York, was walking with her 16-year-old daughter, Jenna, when a Toyota Corolla barreled toward them in reverse. The driver, 80-year-old Ann Riolo, had just backed out of a bakery parking lot. She hit the accelerator without realizing the car was still in reverse. Instead of going forward, the car went backwards, jumped the curb and headed toward the two women, according to the New York Post. Aluska managed to push Jenna nearly out of the car’s path, but the vehicle slammed the mother of three up against the wall of a fire station, according to the New York Daily News. “Diane Aluska … put her hand on her daughter’s shoulder and attempted to push her out of the way,” Detective Sgt. Joshua Vallum pleaded guilty last December to the 2015 murder of his former romantic partner, 17-year-old Mercedes Williamson, because she was a trans person. The 29-year-old man appeared in Gulfport, Mississippi before a federal judge who could have imposed a maximum sentence of life without parole. Harper Jean Tobin, spokeswoman for the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), a Washington DC advocacy group, said the murder was part of an “epidemic of violence against transgender people” in the United States. “It’s essential that biased crime against trans people be recognized as a serious national problem,” she said in a phone interview. Two Policemen have been shot dead along Okene-Ogori-Mangogo road in Kogi Central by unknown gunmen. It was reliably gathered that the two Policemen were on duty in the early hours of today when they were attacked by the gunmen. Sources close to the Kogi State Police Command told our correspondent that the suspected killers went away with their AK-47 adding that the command has taken moves to arrest the gunmen. The Kogi State Police Commissioner, Wilson Inalegwu while confirming the killings said that it was a sad day for the command, adding that it was on the trail of the perpetrators. He assured members of the public that they will arrest the killers in the next few days. Also speaking, the administrator of Ogori-Mangogo Local Government Council, Mr. Moses Akande said it was unfortunate that the two policemen were killed by unknown gunmen when they were on duty. A herdsman carrying gun Eight persons were feared dead following an attack by suspected herdsmen, on two villages in Logo Local Government Area of Benue state, a Police statement said. The Spokesman of the Police Command in Benue, ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the attacks in a statement on Monday in Makurdi. Yamu said the attacks on Akaa and Tse-Orlalu villages in Mbamar, Ugondo communities, were perpetrated by suspected herdsmen late on Sunday. He said that the police had yet to establish the motive for the attack and that adequate personnel had been drafted to the villages to restore normalcy. Fighting over land use between semi-nomadic cattle herders and more settled communities, claims hundreds of lives yearly in the middle belt and in northern Nigeria. Last year, the government said preventing attacks was a security priority. Bala Elkana, a spokesman for Niger state police, said the attack happened at about 05:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Saturday at Epogi community, in the Mokwa area of the state. “It was a clash between farmers and herders which had been initially handled but some herders felt unsatisfied and … they launched a reprisal attack on some villagers praying in a mosque,” Elkana said. The suspect, a 35-year-old man called Abubaka Adamu, popularly known as ‘Pepper’ was arrested around New Prison area, Potiskum, Potiskum local government area, Yobe state. According to the statement, Adamu was arrested on Sunday, May 14 by the Troops of 233 Battalion, 27 Task Force Brigade, of the Nigerian army, assisted by local vigilantes.
