NORTH KOREAN MINISTER TREATS "TRUMP'S PRONOUNCEMENT AS A DECLARATION OF WAR"

Image
North Korea is treating President Donald Trump's latest salvo in the United nations' nuclear spat as a "declaration of war," and is therefore claiming the right to shoot down American bombers in international airspace, North Korea's foreign minister said Monday. Ri Yong Ho, speaking in New York City where he was attending the United Nations General Assembly, urged other nations in the world body to remember that the United States declared war on North Korea — the U.S. has not done so — and touted nations' right to self-defense under the U.N. charter. "Since the U.S. declared war on our country we will have every right to make counter measures, including the right to shoot down the United States strategic bombers even when they are not yet inside the airspace border of our country," Ri said. President Donald Trump had tweeted that North Korea "won't be around much longer" if a speech Ri made at the United Nations mirrors the sentiments o

Myanmar's army said Sunday that a mass grave of 28 Hindus had been discovered in violence-wracked Rakhine state, blaming the killings on Muslim Rohingya militants. The announcement could not be independently verified in an region that has been seized by communal violence since Rohingya militant raids on August 25 triggered a sweeping security crackdown. "Security members found and dug up 28 dead bodies of Hindus who were cruelly violently and killed by ARSA extremist Bengali terrorists in Rakhine State," a statement posted on the army chief's website said. The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) is the group whose attacks on police posts triggered an army backlash so brutal that the UN believes it amounts to ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority. More than 430,000 Rohingya have fled the region to Bangladesh in under a month. Some 30,000 Hindus and Buddhists based in the area have also been displaced, with some saying were terrorised by Rohingya militants. The army

A holidaymaker recently got home from France to find a 22-year-old Ethiopian illegal immigrant hiding in the boot of his Nissan. Dumbfounded Paul Edmunds, 59, was unpacking when he saw the man's trainers poking out from among his bags. Paul said: "He asked if he was in England. I said 'Yes — well Wales, actually.' He made a prayer gesture and smiled." The man, who crept into the van at Calais, France, was arrested in Caersws, Wales. Paul and wife Janet had stopped in the French port for a toilet break before taking the Eurotunnel shuttle back to Britain. But as Paul unpacked their Nissan Navara at home following a 4½ hour drive from Folkestone he spotted a strange pair of trainers. Businessman Paul said: "When I saw a face I asked 'Where do you come from, Calais?' He didn't speak English but was able to ask if he was in England. I asked him again where he was from and he said 'Africa'. He had a phone and was trying to contact someone here.

Pump-action rifles intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service. Two out of the five men being prosecuted by the Federal Government for unlawful importation of 661 pump-action rifles into the country have indicated their intent to enter into plea bargain with the prosecution. The defendants – Mahmud Hassan, Oscar Okafor, Donatus Achinulo, Matthew Okoye, said to be at large, and Salihu Danjuma – had been arraigned by the Attorney General of the Federation on 14 June before the Federal High Court in Lagos. They had all pleaded not guilty to the eight charges pressed against them, while the trial judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji, refused their bail applications in view of the gravity of the charges levelled against them. The matter was subsequently adjourned till September 25 for trial. However, at the resumed proceedings on Monday, the second and third defendants, Oscar Okafor and Donatus Achinulo, respectively, who had changed their lawyers, indicated their intentions to change their plea fro

ALLEGED BIGGEST NIGERIAN THIEF'S LAWYER BLOCKS EFCC FROM INTERROGATING HER IN THE UK

Image
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has claimed its investigative team has been blocked from meeting with the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the United Kingdom. The ex-minister has been staying in the UK since 2015 when investigation into her tenure began. But EFCC stated that its efforts to interrogate her over the allegations had been abortive as her lawyer, John Binns of BCL Solicitors, refused to allow the commission's team of investigators, led by Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, to meet with her in the UK earlier in March this year. A detective with the commission, Mr. Rufai Zaki, who deposed to the EFCC's counter-affidavit, added that it was not yet possible to bring the former minister back to Nigeria as she was being investigated by the UK's Metropolitan Police for several other financial crimes, saying the probe had reached an advanced stage. In one of the nine counts, the anti-graft agency alleged that Alison-Maduek

UNRAVELING COLD CASES

Image
The Lagos State Government has finally completed the construction and equipment of the first DNA and Forensic Centre in West Africa.  This would go a long way in unraveling unresolved crimes and stemming new ones not only in the state but across the country. Previous administrations at different times attempted to put faces to huge records of unresolved crimes in Lagos State. From the Bola Tinubu era to the Babatunde Fashola period, the Lagos State Government had recognised the centrality of deoxyribo-nucleic acid (DNA) facility if the trend of unresolved crimes must end, not just in the metropolis, but also in the federation. But none of these administrations was able to put up a DNA centre to burst the cycle of unresolved crimes in the state. Concerned as it was then, the Fashola government came up with a plan to build a comprehensive forensic laboratory, which former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Femi Hamzat then said, would cost N82 billion and was designed to serve

WILDLIFE LOVER SUSPECTED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED BY PET PYTHON

Image
LATE DAN'S BODY SEEN LYING NEXT TO THE PYTHON ABOVE A wildlife lover found dead at his home may have been killed by his pet snake, it is feared. Police said Dan Brandon, 31, was found unresponsive in his room with one of his pythons out of its cage nearby. Dan is said to have suffered "serious injuries". The death in Church Crookham, Hampshire, is being treated as non-suspicious but one line of inquiry is that the pet snake was involved. Pythons have killed humans before, but it is believed it would be the first time it has happened in Britain. And experts say it is unlikely as pythons generally only kill what they want to eat. Dan's social media profile was filled with pictures of him enjoying the company of his snakes. Several images feature a large Burmese python wrapped around Dan's body and neck. One friend commented: "You're mental!" "You do love a snake!" another added. In another photo, Dan is

Speaking to journalists at Lokoja on Sunday, the Director General on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Kingsley Fanwo urged workers to continue to go to their work places in order to serve the people of the state. He said, "Labour leaders in the state have been attempting to denigrate the integrity of the State Government by creating a false impression of non-payment of salaries despite our decision to publish all the payments to civil servants in the state in various media, including the state website. "We urge the organized Labour to rescind their decision and call off the ill-fated strike in the interest of the good people of the

We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet," President Donald Trump tweeted just after his administration released the details of the restrictions Sunday night.
