ONIGBESE GOVERNOR OF KOGI MOVES TO END STRIKE IN STATE UNIVERSITY

Governor  Yahaya Bello of Kogi state has appealed to members of the state university's academic staff union to call off their strike.(Which would be a big mistake if they comply) Bello, who visited the University at Ayingba on Tuesday, pledged to pay all the salary arrears of lecturers and non-academic staff of the institution this month. He said the payment would cover those on contract and study leave, as well as those employed in 2015. Five students of Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo state have been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly raping a female colleague of the  same institution. According to police, the suspects who include Akinola Timilehin, Olagbaju Tobi, Adetuyi Olakunle, Adeyemi Adebisi and Eric Nwage carried out the dastardly act at Road 17, Funbi-Fagun Housing Estate, Ondo town last week Monday. The police said the victim was a student in the Department of History/English and was allegedly raped outside the campus in turn by the suspects. The suspects were paraded on Wednesday by the police at the headquarters of the command in Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital. They were alleged to have recorded the illicit sexual act on video and threatened the victim that they would upload the footage online if she reported the matter to anybody. SENATE ORDERS HOSPITALS TO TREAT GUNSHOT WOUND VICTIMS WITHOUT POLICE REPORT

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill that compels hospitals across the country to treat gunshot victims without demanding police report or monetary deposit. The bill titled, "Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots" was passed during the upper legislative chamber's Tuesday's plenary session. The bill mandates security agents to assist individuals with gunshot wounds and ensure that they are taken to the nearest hospital for immediate treatment. President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, while passing the bill said most gunshot victims are not criminals. "By the passage of this Bill, the Senate has moved to ensure that every hospital in Nigeria, both public and private, must accept to treat victims of gunshot wounds without any clearance from the police. Hon. Herman Hembe The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, again refused to swear in the member-elect for Konshisha/Vandeikya Federal Constituency of Benue state, Dorothy Mato. Mato is to replace the former chairman of the House Committee on Federal Capital Territory, Rep. Herma Hembe. The Supreme Court had on June 25 sacked Hembe and Sen. Sani Abubakar Danladi and ordered that Hon. Mato and Shuaibu Isa Lau be sworn in immediately. The court also ordered the sacked legislators to refund all monies collected as salaries and allowances in the last two years. While Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau had since been sworn in by the Senate President, Hon. Mato's swearing is still hanging in the House. Last Thursday, the House Spokesman, Rep. At least 16 people have been killed and 20 others injured when suicide bombers attacked villages on the outskirts of Maiduguri last night, eyewitnesses said. The Nigerian Senate at plenary in the House of Assembly, Abuja The Nigeria Senate has received a petition against Kogi state Chief of Staff, Edward Onoja, accusing him of being a party to a N53 million fraud while a Guarantee Trust Bank PLC member of staff. While submitting the petition against Onoja on Wednesday, Senator Hamma Misau (APC/Bauchi Central) explained that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had sometime ago invited Onoja, but he was let off the hook. Senate President Bukola Saraki, while admitting the petition, asked the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions headed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP/Imo East) to do a thorough investigation and revert to the Chambers. A former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday warned the coalition of Northern youths against carrying out any violent act against residents of Igbo origin. Kalu was unequivocal in his promise of dire consequences if any harm comes to Igbo residents of states in the northern region. Suspected Internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo boys , have turned the Facebook page of the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police Force into an avenue to advertise their skills. The suspects, through a series of comments, demanded between N5,000 and N50,000 from those who wanted to learn classified sites for defrauding people, especially foreigners, and offered options of online, as well as physical teaching platforms. Hundreds of persons, including students, graduates and ladies, indicated interest in learning the skills for making quick money and provided their mobile numbers on the SFU Facebook page. The comments were reactions to a post by the SFU sensitising the public to Internet fraud.
