AN Egyptian, dubbed the world’s heaviest woman, has left her home for the first time in 25 years for life-saving surgery.

Eman Ahmed, 36, who tips the scales at 78 stone, was flown from her home in Alexandria on a specially modified cargo plane to India to undergo a series of operations to help her lose weight.

Earlier today, she arrived in Mumbai where she was greeted by a team of doctors who will perform surgery to shrink her stomach to save her life.

The wall of her room reportedly had to be knocked down to bring her out before she was was lifted out of her bed by a crane and placed in an Egypt Air cargo plane.

After a seven-hour long flight, she was placed in a mini-truck at Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport and transported to Saifee Hospital in Mumbai in western India, where she will undergo treatment.

As a child Eman was diagnosed with elephantiasis which caused her body to swell which made her drop out of primary school after suffering a cerebral stroke which left her bed-ridden

She was accompanied by her sister Shaimaa Ahmed and a team of doctors from the hospital.

An official from the hospital said: “Given the fact that she is so heavy and not moved for the last 25 years she is at a high risk for a pulmonary embolism and hence has been put on blood thinners to try and minimise the chances of such an eventuality during her transfer.”

Eman was born weighing nearly one stone and was diagnosed with elephantiasis- parasitic infection – which causes extreme swelling in a person’s limbs and arms.

By the time she turned 11, she was too heavy to support her weight standing up, and resorted to crawling in the house on her knees, around the same time she dropped out of primary school after tragically suffering a cerebral stroke which left her bed-ridden and exacerbated her conditions and since remained in her room.

She has suffered paralysis in right leg and right arm which has left her completely immobile even in her bed.

A special bed was created by local artisans in requirements with the safety precautions as laid out by the airlines for her safe transport on ground and in the plane that was furnished with all the equipment required in case of an emergency.

Her family had posted a desperate plea online to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi asking for medical assistance.

After hearing about her case, obesity surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, from India, had offered to carry out the procedure free of charge.

But initially no airline was willing to fly her from Egypt to India owing to her health complications and denied a visa prompting the doctor to seek help from country’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj.

She soon facilitated the processing and Eman Ahmed was issued a medical visa by Indian Embassy in a Cairo.

Dr. Muzaffal Lakdawala said: “We had taken all the precautions possible to ensure that Eman’s journey to India is accomplished without incident.

The hospital has also constructed a special room with broad doorway and special intensive care unit to house Eman.

Eman will then be put on diet by nutritionist to reduce water retention in body and some weight.
