KENYAN RERUN ELECTIONS KICK OFF WITH LITTLE ACTIVITY IN NYANZA, WESTERN KENYA REGIONS

- As early as 5 AM, voters were already lined up outside polling stations in preparations to cast their vote in the repeat presidential election

- High voter turn out was reported in Mt Kenya

- Little activity was reported in NASA opposition strongholds; Nyanza and Western Kenya

- Raila Odinga asked his supporters to stay home and pray instead of taking to the streets to demonstrate as earlier planned

9:39 - Kisumu Central Returning Officer John Ngutai waits for Presiding Officers and Deputy Presiding Officers to collect voting material for 196 polling stations. No one showed up

8:50 AM - Heavy rains hamper distribution of voting materials in Wajir; some polling stations in Wajir South and Wajir West yet to receive ballot papers

8: 26 AM- Election materials including, ballot boxes and electronic kits to identify voters and transmit results have not arrived in polling stations in Kisumu and Homa Bay counties

8:23 AM - 90 percent of polling stations have been opened in the country ~ Interior CS Matiangi.

8:20 AM- Gates to the Olympic Primary School polling station in Kibra constituency remains locked and barricaded. This is the polling station where National Super Alliance's Raila Odinga registered to vote in the past elections. He is not participating in the October 26 poll

7:40 AM- Anti-election demos in Changamwe, Mombasa county. Protesters have blocked a road leading to a polling station in Bangladesh slums. Voting yet to begin.

7:33 AM- Heavy police presence witnessed in Kibra constituency and Kawangware, Nairobi county

7:20 AM- IEBC official at Mbauro primary school in Wundanyi constituency wait for voters, the officials says no voter has arrived

7:10 AM - AU elections observers led by the chairman Thabo Mbeki make their way into Moi Avenue Pry. polling center, Nairobi county

7:05 AM- Some polling stations in Homa Bay remain unopened as high voter turnout is registered at the Kongowea Municipal Hall in Mombasa county.

7:00 AM- Roads in Migori county remain blocked. Youth engaged police in running battles since Wednesday, October 25, as they attempted to stop the election from taking place.

Two people were shot in the melee.Attempts by police to clear the roads were immediately thwarted as youth put up more barricades. They went as far as blocking the Kenya-Tanzania bridge in the county.

IEBC was forced to transport election material to this county under heavy, armed security following prior warnings from county leaders not to step foot in their territory.

6:50 AM- Only a handful of voters could be seen at polling stations in Mumias as well as in Isiolo county

The voter turn out in Kakamega county was also low. In one of his final remarks ahead of the October 26 repeat election, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya reminded his people that there will be no election and urged supporters to remain home.

6:27 AM - Siaya residents barricade roads, light bonfires, paralyze transport, insist there will be no voting in the county

6:26 AM- Ballot boxes yet to be distributed in Rongo, Suna East, Suna West constituencies of Migori county

6:20 AM - Several youth bearing stones warn residents of Migori town against voting

6:00 AM- Thatha primary school polling station, Masinga constituency in Machakos constituency opens, voters yet to show up

According to information seen, there was a high voter turn out in Mount Kenya regions as low activity was witnessed in Nyanza and Western Kenya regions.

The National Police had deployed an extra 1, 600 police officers to Nyanza and Western Kenya regions on Wednesday, October 25.

This move was made to quell unrest that was witnessed in the region in the past few weeks as the opposition demonstrated against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The National Super Alliance had initially urged their supporters to come out and demonstrate on election day but changed the mind at the last minute, asking their supporters to stay at home, pray and not vote.

Polling stations opened across the country at 6 am as Kenyans returned to the ballot to elect a president in the repeat poll on Thursday, October 26.
