Nyamira school names dormitory after Uhuru, but not everyone is happy
A national school in Nyamira county is on the spot following a visit by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, March 21, where he commissioned a dormitory.
Nyambaria Boys High school courted controversy when it renamed a dormitory after Uhuru, something that did not go down well with residents and alumni.
The famous Sakagwa dormitory was renamed Uhuru Kenyatta dormintory, effectively ending its association with the great Kisii prophet Sakagwa.
Sakagwa is held with high esteem among the Abagusii people considering he foresaw the coming of colonialists in Getembe, present-day Kisii town.
He is also renowned for fighting off colonialism and standing for the Kisii community.
Now the school alumni has condemned the renaming of the dormitory which was apparently constructed in 1997 and commissioned by Uhuru on Tuesday.
The former students have demanded an explanation from the school management on how the decision was reached without wide consultations with stakeholders.
In a letter drafted by the alumni association, the former students want Uhuru's name deleted and the old one restored.
Their calls have received backing from the local community.
