We have received reports of the arrest & detention of Mr. Austin Okai, a well-known critic of the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police Force. 2. Mr. Okai’s arrest,  detention & subsequent transfer to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has been confirmed by the Officer in Charge of SARS in Abuja. Mr. Okai was arrested by a SARS team led by ACP Kolo. 3. We condemn Mr. Okai’s arrest & detention in its entirety. Mr. Okai’s arrest is the latest chapter in a series of attempts to clamp down on free speech in Nigeria. 4. There are concerns over Mr. Okai’s safety & wellbeing. A few weeks ago, he was attacked & physically assaulted by political thugs. This arrest shows a probable link between that assault & the current government of Kogi State. 5. The Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello has been accused of ordering the arrest and detention of a renowned blogger and fierce critic, Austin Okai by the anti-robbery squad. According to a  civil rights organisation, Kogi Renaissance Group (KRG) the activist was said to have been picked on Sunday, April 9, 2017 by security operatives in an eatery in Utako area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he had gone to eat with some friends and thereafter whisked to Lokoja. The KRG in a statement by its spokesman, Edward Obalemo, also vowed: “to mobilise other civil society groups and affiliate organizations to make Kogi State ungovernable unless Okai was released in the next 24 hours.” For the KRG, the arrest of Okai was the height of intolerance and insensitivity on the part of Governor Bello, adding that it had become clear that the latter wants to rule Kogi by force. The Nigerian government has reacted to the killing of a Nigerian identified as Rasak Alao in South Africa. Recall that the Nigerian man, an auto mechanic, was on Thursday killed in South Africa after he was attacked alongside other Nigerians in Polokwane, Limpopo Province in South Africa. Reports indicated that the men were attacked following suspicions that they were into drug trafficking. Rasak Alao whose car was burnt lost his life in the attack which was carried out on him and five other Nigerians. In reaction, the Federal government issued a statement condemning the act and repeated attack on Nigerian nationals living in the country. The young man has been identified as Bayode Ahmed Lawal, an Industrial and Applied Chemistry graduate of Unilorin, Kwara State. According to Festaconline, the sad event started from Mobil filling station when Bayo laid down on the floor. He was with some of his friends at this time and they beckoned on him to stand up while trying to find out what was wrong with him. He stood up and started walking fast before he broke into a run towards the bridge. His friends tried to stop him, chasing him, before they could get hold of him, he had already jumped into the canal. Some people claimed that he had psychological issues which might have been deduced from his last tweet.

A 45-year-old man identified as Sani Ibrahim has been arrested by the Katsina State Police Command for sexually abusing a 9-year-old school boy after luring him with N20 in the state. Addressing newsmen in the state yesterday, the State Commissioner of Police, Usman Ali Abdullahi disclosed that the 45-year-old man, who sells cow head committed the act around the Katsina State Central Police Station, in Kofar Soro. Abdullahi said the suspect was arrested following a tip-off, adding that investigation was ongoing, after which he would be charged to court.
