Concerned Nigerian Groups Cite Impunity In Arrest Of Kogi Gov's Critic Austin Okai

We have received reports of the arrest & detention of Mr. Austin Okai, a well-known critic of the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police Force.

2. Mr. Okai’s arrest,  detention & subsequent transfer to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has been confirmed by the Officer in Charge of SARS in Abuja. Mr. Okai was arrested by a SARS team led by ACP Kolo.

3. We condemn Mr. Okai’s arrest & detention in its entirety. Mr. Okai’s arrest is the latest chapter in a series of attempts to clamp down on free speech in Nigeria.

4. There are concerns over Mr. Okai’s safety & wellbeing. A few weeks ago, he was attacked & physically assaulted by political thugs. This arrest shows a probable link between that assault & the current government of Kogi State.

5. We call for Mr. Okai’s  unconditional release & an end to the absurd persecution of real & perceived political enemies.

6. We also call for governments all over Nigeria to show greater respect & regard for the rights of the Nigerian people as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

German national dies after slumping at Lagos airport A German national, Mr Brenard Christo, who slumped  on Friday  at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, has died at an undisclosed hospital. The spokesman for the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the death of the German to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  on Saturday . Alabi said the deceased was waiting to board a local Arik Air flight  on Friday  morning when he suddenly collapsed. He said medical personnel attached to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rushed to the scene to assist the German citizen and was eventually taken to a hospital where he later passed on. WOMAN STUNS COURT AS SHE ALLEGES "POLICE DEMANDED SEX TO GRANT BAIL"

File Photo A Lagos High Court was stunned today as a 27-year-old detained housewife, Mrs Victoria Amodu, accused an Investigative police officer (IPO) at Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja Division, of demanding sex before she could be released from custody. Victoria, who gave the testimony as a defence witness, told Justice Kudirat Jose of an Ikeja High Court that the IPO (name not mentioned) demanded that unless she had sex with him, she wouldn’t be allowed home on bail. BOWE BERGDAHL WON'T BE HEADING TO PRISON AFTER ALL

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who deserted his unit in Afghanistan and was later captured by the Taliban in 2009, won't have to face prison time, a military judge ruled in his case on Friday. Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty last month, is still facing dishonorable discharge from the military, loss of his government benefits, and having to pay a $10,000 restitution. He'll also be demoted, becoming a private. However, he's avoiding by far the most serious punishment.
