TEXAS POLICE CHANGE STORY IN SHOOTING TO DEATH OF BLACK TEEN

Image
AJC HOMEPAGE Odell Edwards wipes away tears as he sits with his wife, Charmaine Edwards The police on Monday changed their story about the shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards by a Balch Springs, Texas, officer.  The car in which Jordan was riding was not backing toward officers “in an aggressive manner,” as police initially described, Police Chief Jonathan Haber said. Rather, police video shows that the car was actually driving away when an officer fired his rifle into the vehicle, striking Jordan in the head, Haber said. Jordan was killed Saturday night as he and four other teenagers left the scene of a house party at the home of another teen. A neighbor had called police, saying he thought teenagers were drinking at the house. Attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing Jordan’s family, said during an earlier press conference Monday that police were "offering facts that they believe paint a picture that would justify the unjustifiable."

Former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager, right, walks from the Charleston County Courthouse under the protection of the Charleston County Sheriff's Department . COLUMBIA,S.C — A white former South Carolina police officer planned to plead guilty Tuesday to violating the civil rights of an unarmed black motorist he shot and killed as the man ran from a 2015 traffic stop, according to a copy of the plea agreement obtained by The Associated Press. The 13-page document also notes that as part of the deal, state prosecutors would drop a pending murder charge against Michael Slager, effectively bringing to a close both parallel cases against the former North Charleston police officer. Slager, 35, had been scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday for motions ahead of his federal trial planned for later this month in the April 2015 death of Walter Scott. A bystander captured Scott's shooting on cellphone video, which was viewed millions of times. The 50-year-ol

LAWYER ARGUES ACCUSED POLYGAMIST'S TRIAL RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED

Cranbrook, British Columbia • A lawyer whose client is on trial for polygamy in Canada argued Monday that evidence in the case was collected amid confusion over the legality of the country's laws on plural marriage. Attorney Blair Suffredine is asking a judge to lift a polygamy charge against Winston Blackmore. Blackmore and James Oler each face one count of polygamy. Both men have served as bishops for the religious settlement of Bountiful, British Columbia, which follows the teachings of a Mormon offshoot sect, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. Blackmore is accused of marrying 24 women. Oler is accused of having four wives. Suffredine said in court that evidence against Blackmore was collected from 1990 to 2011, a period when the constitutionality of Canada's laws prohibiting polygamy was unclear. The law was upheld in 2011. Following years of legal wrangling, a criminal trial for Blackmore and Oler began last month, more than 25 year

Health officials immediately tested the victims for Ebola, yellow fever and Lassa fever, but they were all ruled out. Most of the ill attended a funeral for a Christian leader in Greenville on April 22.        "April 25, we got a call from the Sinoe County health team about a series of unexplained deaths," said Sorbor George, communication director for Liberia's Ministry of Health, adding that samples have been sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.        According to Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the CDC, "timi

A memorial service held today May 2 for two soldiers killed on the line of control, allegedly "mutilated" by Pakistan Army troops. Pakistan denies any involvement. (New Delhi)The bodies of two Indian soldiers allegedly killed while patrolling the Kashmir border were flown home Tuesday, as the Indian Army vowed revenge for what it called a "despicable act." India has accused Pakistani soldiers of mutilating the soldiers' bodies on May 1 after firing rockets and mortars along the Line of Control (LOC) in the Poonch district of Kashmir. Asked whether the soldiers killed by artillery fire, an Indian Army official said the cause of death was unclear, adding that more information would come from the autopsy. The official declined to go into detail about how or exactly when the mutilation occurred. In a statement, Pakistan's army vehemently denied that Pakistani troops had crossed the border or mutilated the soldiers. It said was "a highly profession

SEE FBI TRANSLATOR WHO WENT ROGUE AND MARRIED AN ISIS TERRORIST

Image
An FBI translator with a top-secret security clearance traveled to Syria in 2014 and married a key ISIS operative she had been assigned to investigate, CNN has learned.       The rogue employee, Daniela Greene, lied to the FBI about where she was going and warned her new husband he was under investigation, according to federal court records.       Greene's saga, which has never been publicized, exposes an embarrassing breach of national security at the FBI—an agency that has made its mission rooting out ISIS sympathizers across the country.       It also raises questions about whether Greene received favorable treatment from Justice Department prosecutors who charged her with a relatively minor offense, then asked a judge to give her a reduced sentence in exchange for her cooperation, the details of which remain shrouded in court-ordered secrecy.
