NIGERIA'S TEAM D'TIGRESS BEATS STRONG RIVAL SENEGAL TO WIN BASKET BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Nigeria's D'Tigress have emerged champions of the 2017 FIBA Women's Afrobasket. D'Tigress won the title on Sunday evening after defeating strong rivals Senegal 65-48 in the final.

Trailing by six points from the first quarter, the Nigerians fought back to win the second quarter 21-10 points. D'Tigress never looked back as they extended their lead by winning the third quarter 15-7 points and the fourth quarter 17-13 points.

Point guard, Osaretin Ekhator, emerged top performer for Nigeria with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Following their victory, Nigeria also qualified for the FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain next year.

A 40-year-old man, Stephen Akpata, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Onyinye Faustina Eze, to death at the Kpansia suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. Briefing newsmen at the headquarters of the Bayelsa Police Command in Yenagoa, the state Police Commissioner, Asuquo Amba, said the suspect, who fled to Gbana last month after committing the crime, was apprehended two weeks later in Lagos by security operatives on his trail. A man has been arrested by the Egyptian police after he allegedly admitted to beating his 85-year-old mother to death because his wife complained about her. Zeinab as-Sayyid Mahfouz died at a hospital in Alexandria on September 15 after what many speculated to be domestic violence. GIANT HORNETS STING 87 YEAR OLD WOMAN TO DEATH

Asian Hornet A wheelchair-bound 87-year-old pensioner, Chieko Kikuchi, who was attacked by giant hornets in Japan and stung 150 times, has died. According to a firefighter,  emergency workers stood by powerless to help her. A swarm of hornets swooped on Kikuchi as she was on her way back from her care centre in western Japan, accompanied by a helper. The helper called firefighters but they could not reach the woman immediately as the swarm around her was too thick and they had no protective equipment. After the ordeal, which lasted around 50 minutes, the woman was rushed to hospital but died the following day, the firefighter said. "It was an unusual operation for us," he admitted. The death occurred in mid-September but was only reported on Friday, making headline news on national bulletins.
