85-year-old remanded in prison for allegedly killing scavenger

AN 85-year-old man, Mohammed Bello was on Friday remanded in prison for allegedly clubbing a man to death.Bello, who was arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court, committed the crime on January 17, at about 11.30 a.m. at Ogudu Grammar School.
It was gathered that a fight had ensued between the deceased (Ismaila Ibrahim), a scavenger and another man over scavenging in the school environment.
Bello had stepped in to settle the fight but that action did not go down well with Ibrahim, who felt Bello’s involvement had given the other man an upper hand in the fight.
The deceased started abusing Bello, who got angry and picked up a plank with which he hit the deceased on the head, which led to his death.

The presiding Magistrate, K.A. Ariyo, ordered that the octogenarian be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till February 28, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
