Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, says the students of Igbonla Model College, Epe, who were kidnapped 64 days ago, were rescued after the killing of their 20 abductors in a gun battle.

The police chief disclosed that the gun battle took place in the creeks of Ondo state, leaving one civilian volunteer dead, while four other civilian volunteers and eight policemen sustained injuries.

Owoseni, who made the disclosure on Friday at a press briefing in Lagos, also disclosed that the force had arrested a man who attempted to defraud the parents of the kidnapped students by asking them to bring the ransom for the students to Abeokuta.

He commended South West Governors for their commitment to combat crime in the region, saying that the communiqué issued in Abeokuta with respect to creation of Joint Security Task Force for the region, is already yielding positive result.

The former governor of Osun state and the Osun West senator, Isiaka Adeleke, is reported to have died of an overdose of painkillers. The drugs were administered to him by an unqualified medical technician. According to Sahara Reporters, the Senator received the medication following complaints of serious pain in his legs at the beginning of day-long political rally and meetings. 49  year old Clement Silver,a Tiv man from Benue State but residing at Odozi Street, Agbor, has been arrested and paraded for allegedly arranging his own kidnap to fraudulently obtain money from his wife. A Minna Chief Magistrates’ Court has granted bail to a housewife, Eucharia Mba, who was earlier apprehended by the police for allegedly selling her four-month-old baby for N605,000. Mba was arrested alongside Bright Ahuruezeanya of Chanchaga area of Minna and one Peter Ani. The defendants are facing three counts bordering on criminal conspiracy, buying and selling of a minor. The offence contravened sections 79 and 278 of the Penal Code Law.
