A 101-year-old paedophile who sexually abused a schoolgirl 40 years ago has been ordered to pay her £25,000 in compensation. But Douglas Hammersley, who will turn 102 this month, has been spared jail for molesting his young victim during the 1970s. 

The woman, now in her 40s, went to the police after Douglas' family threw him a party to celebrate his 100th birthday last year and the event was reported in a local newspaper.

She was praised for her bravery and courage during the sentencing hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court on Monday. Hammersley was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, placed on the sex offender register and ordered to pay £25,000 compensation.

SunNewsUK reports that Judge Francis Sheridan said that the victim has waited a long time for justice and he hopes she gets closure. Hammersley previously pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault against a girl under the age of 14, in 1977 and 1979

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it had so far, through painstaking investigations by its operatives, traced N47.2bn and $487.5m in cash and properties to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke. These, the anti-graft agency said, were apart from "boxes of gold, silver and diamond jewellery, worth several million British pounds sterling," discovered during a search of Diezani's palatial residences in Abuja. The EFCC said it discovered several of Diezani's landed properties scattered all over Lagos and other parts of the country in the course of its investigations, adding that it was doubtful if the former minister declared her true assets as required of public officials. Policemen from the Ipakodo division have arrested a suspected killer of a family of three in Ibeshe Titun, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. It was learnt that the suspect, whose identity had yet to be ascertained, was arrested on Tuesday in the community.
