Appeal Court confirms Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP chairman

The Court of Appeal has declared Ali Modu Sheriff as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The court sitting in sitting in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state, on Friday, February 17 declared the decision taking at the May 21 Port-Harcourt convention of the party as null and void, Tribune reports.
The three judges presiding over the case in a unanimous decision agreed that Modu Sheriff is the chairman of the PDP.
This judgement will bring an end the leadership crisis rocking the main opposition party, as both factional chairmen Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff, have both laid claim to be the authentic representative of the party.

Makarfi and Sheriff have recorded judgment in many courts in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, but today’s judgment has put an end to the crisis, Daily Trust reports.
Prior to the February 17 judgement, both chieftains of the party expressed readiness to abide by the outcome of the Appeal Court verdict with a view to bringing lasting peace in the party.
Recall that a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had last year gave legitimacy to Makarfi as the chairman of the party, while another court of coordinate jurisdiction in Abuja, headed by Justice Okon Abang, had ruled that Sheriff should be recognised as the chairman.
But an appeal court in Abuja had on December 16, 2016, adjourned indefinitely, the separate hearing in the leadership tussle so as to pave way for the Port Harcourt division of the court to exhaust the case before it.

TERRORIST LEADER SHEKAU An “alarming” number of children, most of them girls, have been used by Boko Haram as suicide bombers in the first months of 2017, UNICEF said Wednesday. PHOTO OF THE DECEASED BEEN TAKEN AWAY An Assistant Superintendent of Customs has allegedly committed suicide in Lungu Village, Gwarinpa, Abuja. The cause of the suicide was yet to be ascertained. Sources said the man, identified as Christian, 44, locked himself in a room and hung himself with a rope on Saturday. A source said the deceased, who was unmarried, was staying with his brother and was said to have been recently transferred to Lagos before the incident happened. The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP Nuruddeen Sabo, said the brother whom the deceased stayed with was at a barber’s shop when the incident happened. He said the man was confirmed dead at the Kubwa General Hospital. “Exhibits recovered include some drugs and knife.” Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was suffering from depression.

Gunmen suspected to be militants on Thursday morning invaded Lagos State Model College, Igbo Nla, Epe, Lagos, abducting the principals and some students. The kidnappers were said to have stormed the school in the early hours when the students were at the morning assembly. The gunmen abducted the principal of the junior secondary school, Mr. Oyesola and Mr. Akirinmade who is the Principal of the senior secondary school. They also abducted some of the students. Presenting the case to the House of Representatives, the member representing Epe Constituency, Wale Raji, appealed to the House to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State to treat the case with utmost urgency. Two people were killed and eight others were wounded May 7, 2017, in an attack near the site of a memorial where a man was slain earlier in the day in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said. It happened in the 2600 block of West 46th Place, police said. The men and women gathered at a makeshift memorial Sunday, down the block from where a man in his 20s had been found shot to death between parked cars in the Southwest Side's Brighton Park neighborhood.
