ELECTION STAFF SAY EFCC FORCED HIM TO ADMIT TAKING N30M FROM DIEZANI

An ex - Administrative Secretary with the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Christian Nwosu , on Thursday alleged that he was cajoled into confessing to taking a bribe of N 30m to compromise the 2015 general elections.

Nwosu , who is being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Lagos for alleged bribery , claimed that the three confessional statements he made to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 28, 2016 and March 15 and 22, 2017 were not done voluntarily .

He claimed to have been threatened and cajoled to make the confessional statements, adding that he was not given the opportunity to consult his lawyer before he made the statements.
He, however, admitted that he signed for and collected N 30m from Fidelity Bank.
Nwosu stated this on Thursday while being led in evidence by his lawyer , Mr. Victor Opara, during a trial - within- trial ordered by Justice Mohammed Idris to test the voluntariness of three confessional statements he made to the EFCC.

The EFCC accused him of conspiring with two other INEC officials to take a total bribe of N 264 . 88m from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources , Mrs . Diezani Alison- Madueke , to compromise the election .
He had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges and opted for a plea bargain , after which the EFCC told the court that it had already recovered N 5 m cash and a landed property worth N 25m from him .
But Nwosu later abandoned the plea bargain after Justice Idris rejected the N 500 , 000 fine proposed for him as punishment by the EFCC.
Justice Idris had held that by virtue of Section 16 (2 )(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition ) Act, under which Nwosu was charged , he was supposed to pay a fine of N 10m or go to jail for two years.

At his resumed trial on Thursday , he maintained that he never voluntarily entered into a plea bargain with the EFCC but was cajoled to do so .

Benue State Police Command has busted two kidnap syndicate of 8 including a Gang of 4 allegedly led by a woman believed to be an associate of the wanted militant leader, Terwase Agwaza, aka Gana, who a week ago abducted a businessman. Japanese workers famously put in long hours, leading, in extreme cases, to karoshi, or death from overwork. Japanese media outfit, NHK, has apologized to the parents of deceased Japanese reporter, Miwa Sado, who died of heart failure after reportedly working for 159 hours of overtime in a month. Sado, who had been covering political news in Tokyo was found dead in her bed in July 2013, reportedly clutching her mobile phone. "The chairman met the parents at their home in the morning and apologised," an NHK spokesman told AFP. A government inquest a year after her death ruled that it was linked to excessive overtime. The State Security Service (SSS), on Saturday, announced the arrest of Husseini Maitangaran, a top commander of by Islamic State of West Africa (ISWA), otherwise known as Boko Haram. A Jehovah's Witness convention in Angola was attacked with toxic gas on Friday, causing over 400 people to faint. A local news source, Portal de Angola, reported on Saturday that three young men were detained after the attack. According to the report, some 7,000 worshippers were at a venue on the outskirts of Luanda for the weekend-long convention. Forty-three victims were rushed to the hospital, but no deaths have been reported. A witness, Abraham Kituxi, told Portal de Angola that his sister-in-law was one of the first to collapse. Former wrestling champion, John Eke Uti a.k.a. Power Uti, was on Tuesday brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates' Court, Lagos, for allegedly killing his wife, Toyin.
