Edo State Speaker Escapes Assassination Attempt



Mr. Justin Okonoboh, Edo state speaker on Friday evening,escaped being murdered at Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

Okonoboh, made this known while briefing journalists in Benin on Saturday.He thanked his backup driver for saving him from the assassins saying:
   “When we looked back, the car was behind my backup Hilux van. The Camry wanted to overtake the Hilux to block me but the driver did not allow them. The Toyota Camry struggled with the Hilux for about five kilometres and they almost crashed but did not give up.

“The policemen inside the Hilux van fired a shot into the air to scare them but that did not deter them as they kept chasing us. It happened around Ugbegun-Nebudin-Ujogba Road. It was when we got to the Benin-Auchi Expressway that they waved their hands to us as a warning.I do not know whether they are armed robbers or kidnappers but I know that only assassins would behave the way the men did.
  “My security aides inside the Hilux said the men were armed. I have enough security aides attached to me but the challenge is that there are no vehicles to convey them when I am travelling,” he explained. Okonoboh said he had reported the matter to the commissioner of police.

DETECTIVES of Delta State Police Command investigating the September 5 ambush of bank officials and policemen on the Benin-Asaba Expressway by bandits, who carted away N25 million from a bullion van, have apprehended and detained an Inspector and three other policemen, said to be on illegal escort duty. Police Public Relations Officer of Delta Command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the arrest and detention of the policemen to Vanguard in Asaba, said Police have released two officials of the bank earlier arrested, while investigations were ongoing. He revealed that the fifth policeman on the illegal escort was shot dead by the bandits, noting that some officials of the bank had earlier approached the Operations Department of the Command for escort men, but that the request was turned down on the grounds that the bank did not have a serviceable van required for such operations.
