FIRST WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION;PANAMA DECLARES HOLIDAY

Panama President Juan Carlos Varela declared a national holiday in celebration at the central American country's first ever qualification for the World Cup.

"It's a historic day for the country. Tomorrow (Thursday) will be a national holiday for public and private sector workers," Varela said on Twitter wedesday.

Panama came from behind to beat Costa Rica 2-1 on Tuesday night and book a ticket to Russia 2018.
The victory left them third in the CONCACAF area qualification behind Mexico and Costa Rica, and sensationally helped knock the United States out of contention.

Thousands of Panamanians celebrated long into the night in the capital Panama City as a cacophony of car horns greeted the historic news.

"Today the planets aligned, you must never lose faith," Varela had said on the Estadio Rommel Fernandez pitch in the capital following the match.
Although not Panama's national game, football is rapidly catching up with baseball and boxing as the country's favourite sport.

A herdsman carrying a gun Herdsmen armed with guns killed 20 farmers and injured eight other people in a mosque in Niger state over the weekend, police said on Monday. Fighting over land use between semi-nomadic cattle herders and more settled communities, claims hundreds of lives yearly in the middle belt and in northern Nigeria. Last year, the government said preventing attacks was a security priority. Bala Elkana, a spokesman for Niger state police, said the attack happened at about 05:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Saturday at Epogi community, in the Mokwa area of the state. “It was a clash between farmers and herders which had been initially handled but some herders felt unsatisfied and … they launched a reprisal attack on some villagers praying in a mosque,” Elkana said. In a bid to improve working conditions in the city’s sex industry, a brothel run by prostitutes themselves will be opened today by the mayor of Amsterdam. An initiative of the city council, the new brothel occupies 14 “windows” across four buildings on the so-called Wallen, Amsterdam’s red light district. About 40 sex workers will be able to operate out of the premises, which are being run by a foundation called My Red Light, in which prostitutes take an active part. “Everything in this project, from the statutes to the decoration of the rooms, is thought out by sex workers,” said one of the prostitutes involved, who asked to remain anonymous. “It is my hope that My Red Light will offer pleasant workspaces, where sex workers can be who they are and feel welcome.” Prostitution has been legal in the Netherlands since 2000.
