A Rivers state High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has discharged Alhaji Hassan Welewa a traditional ruler and four other people out of the 12 persons standing trial for the murder of the Aluu 4.
Recall, that the Aluu 4 killing happened on October 5, 2012, when four undergraduates of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) were killed by a mob in Aluu community, Ikwerre local government area, Rivers state.
12 people were arrested for the dastardly act and placed on trial. On Thursday, January 26, the court delivered its judgement.
According to Punch, the suspects were allowed to go after the director of publicprosecution filed a submission of “no case” for them, saying they were not involved.
However, the remaining seven accused persons are still facing trial, and the case was adjourned till February 9, 2017.
The acquitted traditional ruler of Omuokiri, Aluu community, Welewa, described the court ruling as an act of God.
He went on to say that the judgment was a true justice, noting that he never had a hand in the murder of the four students.
Sadly, jungle justice is common in Nigeria. This is the 21st century but many cities in Nigeria still engage in it.
Almost every week, you must hear at least a story of how people were lynched for stealing or committing one crime or the other and this excludes the ones that go unreported.

WHISTLE BLOWER ASSISTS NAFDAC UNCOVER N200 MILLION FAKE PRODUCTS

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has uncovered fake and unregistered products valued at over N200 million. The products, confiscated through a whistle-blower’s report, were stocked in a building at 11, Omotosho Crescent, off Ewedana Street, Toll Gate, Ota in Ogun State.  The building also served as production outlet for bitters with fake NAFDAC registration numbers. At a briefing in Lagos yesterday, Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, explained that the building is a bungalow of five bedrooms, with two residential rooms, while the other three, the parlour and the kitchen were used for production of unregistered, deceptive and counterfeit products. Police, yesterday, arraigned 53 persons, who were allegedly arrested during a gay marriage, before a magistrate’s court in Chediya-Zaria, Kaduna State. The prosecutor, Mannir Nasir, said the accused were arrested on April 15 at a motel and were being charged for conspiracy, unlawful assembly and belonging to a gang of unlawful society. He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 100 and 197(a) of Criminal Procedure Code, CPC. According to Nasir, “on April 15, at about 9p.m., a team of policemen, led by DSP Muhammad Lawal-Mashi, arrested and brought to the police station 53 persons.” The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and their counsel, Yunusa Umar, asked the court to release them on bail in line with sections 35 (4) and 36 (5) of the Constitution.
