SUSPECT SHOT DEAD AFTER BUFFALO POLICE OFFICER WAS STRUCK IN SHOOTING
A Buffalo police officer was shot and wounded during a traffic stop on Sunday. Police said the cop is expected to survive.
A Buffalo cop was shot Sunday following a traffic stop, and one suspect is dead, officials said.
The officer was shot in the head near Garfield St. and Hartman Place in Riverside shortly after 5 p.m., Buffalo police said.
Officers engaged in a struggle with the suspect at a traffic stop, resulting in one officer getting shot. A second officer then fired one shot at the suspect, striking him in the arm and shoulder, Lt. Jeff Rinaldo said at a press conference Sunday night.
The officer was taken to Erie County Medical Center where he's undergoing surgery, police said.
Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge didn't disclose the officer's injuries but said the cop is expected to survive.
Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda, Mayor Byron Brown and other top officials were with the wounded officer at the hospital, DeGeorge said.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, police said.
The officer who fired the shot is under evaluation at ECMC, police said.
Neither the identities of the police officers nor the suspect have been released.
Police said the incident is under investigation and the officers have been placed on administrative leave.
