COURT GRANTS DSS PERMISSION TO DETAIN TERROR SUSPECT FOR 45 DAYS

The Federal high Court, Abuja, on Thursday granted permission to the Department of State Service (DSS) to detain one Adamu Mohammed for 45 days pending conclusion of investigation.

Mohammed is being investigated for carrying out acts of terrorism by divulging sensitive information to members of Boko Haram.

Justice B.O. Quadri gave the order following an ex-parte application filed by the DSS for an order to remand the suspect for 90 days pending conclusion of investigation.

Quadri reduced the 90 days to 45 days, saying that the law only allowed two months within which a suspect could be detained while investigations were ongoing.

The judge, however, added that the number of days could be reviewed upward where the court deemed it necessary.

"The applicant shall provide the court with an update of the investigation before the expiration of the 45 days; consequent upon such an update, the court might review the remand order upward where necessary."

Mr O.J. Odu, counsel to the DSS who moved the application told the court that it was pursuant to Section 27 (1) of the Terrorism Prevention Act.

Six dead, tens injured in DEADLY highway crash  has claimed six -The accident involved a saloon car and a bus -Five of the deceased were from the saloon car Six people lost their lives early on Sunday morning after deadly accident involving a saloon car and a bus along the Londiani-Muhoroni-Kisumu Highway . The accident occurred when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle and consequently swerved into the other lane, colliding with the Toyota Wish head-on. The meeting of the Federal Executive Council that holds every Wednesday did not hold yesterday. Yesterday would have afforded President Muhammadu Buhari who returned to the country on Saturday the opportunity of presiding over the council meeting for the first time in over three months. Jamie Harron, 27, has been sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai for touching a man's hip as he carried a drink through a crowded bar. He was arrested for public indecency at the Rock Bottom bar on 15 July. The electrician, from Stirling, claimed he was simply trying to avoid spilling his drink when he touched the man. It was thought the case against Harron might have been dropped after reports that the businessman he touched had withdrawn his complaint. But on Sunday the campaign group Detained in Dubai, which has been supporting Harron, said he had been sentenced to three months in jail for public indecency. The group said he would appeal against the jail term but he faced further court proceedings for drinking alcohol and for allegedly swearing at the businessman he touched.
