COURT GRANTS DSS PERMISSION TO DETAIN TERROR SUSPECT FOR 45 DAYS

The Federal high Court, Abuja, on Thursday granted permission to the Department of State Service (DSS) to detain one Adamu Mohammed for 45 days pending conclusion of investigation.

Mohammed is being investigated for carrying out acts of terrorism by divulging sensitive information to members of Boko Haram.

Justice B.O. Quadri gave the order following an ex-parte application filed by the DSS for an order to remand the suspect for 90 days pending conclusion of investigation.

Quadri reduced the 90 days to 45 days, saying that the law only allowed two months within which a suspect could be detained while investigations were ongoing.

The judge, however, added that the number of days could be reviewed upward where the court deemed it necessary.

"The applicant shall provide the court with an update of the investigation before the expiration of the 45 days; consequent upon such an update, the court might review the remand order upward where necessary."

Mr O.J. Odu, counsel to the DSS who moved the application told the court that it was pursuant to Section 27 (1) of the Terrorism Prevention Act.

EX GOVERNOR SULE LAMIDO REMANDED IN PRISON CUSTODY AMIDST PROTESTS

Heavily armed policemen on Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, fired teargas canisters at a crowd that gathered at the Chief Magistrate Court Two for the arraignment of former governor Sule Lamido, who is being tried for making inciting remarks. Counsel for the Jigawa State Government, Ikenna Ekpunobi, insisted that Lamido should not be granted bail until investigation was completed. Emphasising that Lamido was charged with disturbing public peace and inciting public disturbance, Ekpunobi argued that the allegations were contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Code of Jigawa State. A middle aged man has been arrested in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital for being in possession of human parts. Tribune Online gathered that the suspect had been under surveillance of residents of Ita Kudimo, Abata Suban, Pakata area of Ilorin West local government in the past few days after speculation grew that he possessed a corpse in his building. It was also gathered that the neighbours of the suspect swooped on his residence at about noon on Sunday and the suspect was allegedly caught with human parts. ROUND LAKE BEACH.– Three teens have been charged after a suburban Illinois father was killed while trying to sell his iPhone using the popular app OfferUp, according to WGN-TV. Police say 43-year-old Trinidad Bueno-Sanchez of North Chicago, a married man with a 6-year-old child, did everything right when trying to sell his cellphone. Using OfferUp, he found a potential buyer who expressed interest in purchasing his iPhone 6 for $450, and agreed to meet them in the parking lot of a Meijer store in Round Lake Beach the evening of April 24. Gunmen suspected to be militants on Thursday morning invaded Lagos State Model College, Igbo Nla, Epe, Lagos, abducting the principals and some students. The kidnappers were said to have stormed the school in the early hours when the students were at the morning assembly. The gunmen abducted the principal of the junior secondary school, Mr. Oyesola and Mr. Akirinmade who is the Principal of the senior secondary school. They also abducted some of the students. Presenting the case to the House of Representatives, the member representing Epe Constituency, Wale Raji, appealed to the House to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State to treat the case with utmost urgency.
