JAPAN ; SHINZO ABE CRUISES TO REELECTION IN LANDSLIDE VICTORY

  • Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won reelection by a landslide in a snap election this weekend, and his ruling Liberal Democratic Party also claimed a supermajority in parliament. [NYT / Motoko Rich] 
  • Abe is entering his third term, and will become Japan's longest-serving prime minister if he finishes it. [CNN / Yoko Wakatsuki, James Griffiths, and Joshua Berlinger] 
  • He actually isn't all that popular in Japan, having been dogged by corruption scandals that tanked his approval ratings this summer. [The Guardian / Justin McCurry] 
  • But his tenure has been marked by strong economic growth. Already, markets have spiked in response to the news that the country will have stable leadership. [The Diplomat / Anthony Fensom] 
  • There's also not a lot of appetite for a new leader in the face of provocations from North Korea, which Abe has promised to meet with increased pressure after Kim Jong Un's regime launched two missiles over Japan. [BBC] 
  • Abe may use his reelection as a chance to revise Japan's pacifist constitution, which hasn't been amended since the end of World War II. In particular, Abe could potentially get rid of Article 9, the clause that renounces war and says that Japan's army is a self-defense force.

Six dead, tens injured in DEADLY highway crash  has claimed six -The accident involved a saloon car and a bus -Five of the deceased were from the saloon car Six people lost their lives early on Sunday morning after deadly accident involving a saloon car and a bus along the Londiani-Muhoroni-Kisumu Highway . The accident occurred when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle and consequently swerved into the other lane, colliding with the Toyota Wish head-on. Five of the six who died on the spot were from the personal vehicle. Tens of passengers were seriously injured following the incident, and were rushed to hospital by onlookers, prior to the arrival of the police. The meeting of the Federal Executive Council that holds every Wednesday did not hold yesterday. Yesterday would have afforded President Muhammadu Buhari who returned to the country on Saturday the opportunity of presiding over the council meeting for the first time in over three months. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed in a statement that the meeting would not hold. Adesina did not however disclose the reason behind the decision to cancel the meeting. SCOTTISH MAN JAILED FOR ACCIDENTALLY TOUCHING MAN'S HIP IN BUSY BAR

Jamie Harron, 27, has been sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai for touching a man's hip as he carried a drink through a crowded bar. He was arrested for public indecency at the Rock Bottom bar on 15 July. The electrician, from Stirling, claimed he was simply trying to avoid spilling his drink when he touched the man. It was thought the case against Harron might have been dropped after reports that the businessman he touched had withdrawn his complaint. But on Sunday the campaign group Detained in Dubai, which has been supporting Harron, said he had been sentenced to three months in jail for public indecency. The group said he would appeal against the jail term but he faced further court proceedings for drinking alcohol and for allegedly swearing at the businessman he touched.
