LAGOS POLICE VOWS TO STOP PROTEST

The Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni has vowed to stop Tuface's planned protest against the Federal Government slated for February 5 in the state.
Tuface Idibia had announced a nationwide protest in order to draw the attention of the government to the sufferings of Nigerians under this administration.
But Lagos COMPOL Owoseni who had earlier stated that there was no official request from the protesters notifying security agencies of their plan said on Wednesday that intelligence report indicated that criminals might hijack the process and that the police wasn’t ready for that kind of demonstration and as such would not allow it to hold.
“We know that Tuface does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand.
“The Civil Society had said that they do not need police permission to carry out any peaceful protest but they should also be aware that there might be those who share an opposing view. This set of persons may want to disrupt the peaceful demonstration and would want to attack demonstrators,hence we advise individuals or group of persons who may wish to embark on civil demonstration to inform the police so that adequate security arrangement would be provided.”

Heavily armed policemen on Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, fired teargas canisters at a crowd that gathered at the Chief Magistrate Court Two for the arraignment of former governor Sule Lamido, who is being tried for making inciting remarks. Counsel for the Jigawa State Government, Ikenna Ekpunobi, insisted that Lamido should not be granted bail until investigation was completed. Emphasising that Lamido was charged with disturbing public peace and inciting public disturbance, Ekpunobi argued that the allegations were contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Code of Jigawa State. However, Lamido’s counsel, Felix Osimerah, quoting Section 36, sub-section 5 of the 1999 Constitution, argued that Lamido should be presumed innocent even as he stressed that the offences were bailable. A middle aged man has been arrested in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital for being in possession of human parts. Tribune Online gathered that the suspect had been under surveillance of residents of Ita Kudimo, Abata Suban, Pakata area of Ilorin West local government in the past few days after speculation grew that he possessed a corpse in his building. It was also gathered that the neighbours of the suspect swooped on his residence at about noon on Sunday and the suspect was allegedly caught with human parts. He was later dragged to Adewole Police station in the Ilorin metropolis amidst shouting and rain of curses by the crowd of people. Gunmen suspected to be militants on Thursday morning invaded Lagos State Model College, Igbo Nla, Epe, Lagos, abducting the principals and some students. The kidnappers were said to have stormed the school in the early hours when the students were at the morning assembly. The gunmen abducted the principal of the junior secondary school, Mr. Oyesola and Mr. Akirinmade who is the Principal of the senior secondary school. They also abducted some of the students. Presenting the case to the House of Representatives, the member representing Epe Constituency, Wale Raji, appealed to the House to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State to treat the case with utmost urgency. Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa state, has attributed his arrest and perceived persecution to his desire to run for president in 2019. This was disclosed by his chief press secretary, Umar Kyari, in a chat with The Vanguard on Monday. The man, who is an employee of the Dhaka City Corporation, has to unblock the city’s sewer lines without any proper safety equipment. He often has to go dig around underground with only a long stick to help him and with no mask to protect him from the poisonous fumes the sewage emits. Scooping out liquid filth with his bare hands, the hardy worker has the thankless task of clawing out blockages in the bustling Bangladeshi capital. Dhaka has a population in excess of 14 million and has recently been hit by major floods caused by heavy rains and an insufficient storm drainage system.
