The long arm of law has finally caught up with a female criminal who supplies deadly weapons to armed robbers in Calabar.

 Policemen in Cross River state have apprehended a female armourer,Ms. Hope Usang, 25, who leases arms to suspected robbers in Calabar, the state capital.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, who briefed newsmen yesterday on the successes recorded by the command, said that Usang and 21 other suspects were arrested at different locations across the state.

According to Vanguard, Inuwa said that Usang was arrested last month following a case of robbery involving one Paschal Bisong of Ekpeyong Effiok street in Calabar Municipality.

He added that Paschal complained to the police about the robbery attack, his men swung into action and arrested one Emmanuel Edet-Etim and Idoreyin Usa.

He further explained that after a thorough investigation by the police, the suspects confessed that they got the arms from Usang. His words: “In our efforts to build a safe Cross River, we must not tolerate any form of arms proliferation. On February 24, following a report by one Paschal Bisong of a robbery attack, my men swung into action, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Emmanuel Edet-Etim and Idoreyin Usa.

 “The suspects confessed that one Hope Usang supplied them with arms for the robbery. When my men stormed Usang’s house, they recovered three revolvers, four rounds of ammunition, one pistol, one locally-made pistol among others.” He told newsmen that the suspects would soon be charged to court accordingly.

In the same vein, the Commissioner said that 21 other suspects were arrested at different locations across the state for various offences. He listed some of the offences to include robbery, rape, kidnapping, murder, cultism, illegal possession of fire arms among others.

Meanwhile, Usang told Vanguard that the guns found in her house belong to her boyfriend, a student, but did not divulge his name. Her words: “The guns belong to my boyfriend, a student. I never knew that he was keeping some guns in my house.”

Fighting over land use between semi-nomadic cattle herders and more settled communities, claims hundreds of lives yearly in the middle belt and in northern Nigeria. Bala Elkana, a spokesman for Niger state police, said the attack happened at about 05:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Saturday at Epogi community, in the Mokwa area of the state. “It was a clash between farmers and herders which had been initially handled but some herders felt unsatisfied and … they launched a reprisal attack on some villagers praying in a mosque,” Elkana said. A man’s leg was ‘nearly severed’ during a machete attack in north Manchester. The victim also suffered serious head injuries when he was slashed with the weapon at an address on Kingscliffe Street, Harpurhey , on Thursday afternoon. A silver Jeep is said to have pulled up outside the property just before 1.30pm. Three men got out of the vehicle and forced their way into the terraced house, police said. Months after an initial interception, another container filled with arms has been discovered at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, the Nigeria Customs has declared on Tuesday. A source at the port said the container was found at the Ports and Cargo Terminal of the Tin Can Island Ports. “As I speak to you, they’ve ordered everyone to go out of the terminal and they have locked up everywhere,” the source said. The spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs, Tin Can Island Command, Uche Ejesieme, confirmed the incident and said details would be made public later. “We are still counting,” Mr. Ejesieme told Premium Times over the phone.
