FIRST WOMAN EVER TO HEAD SPORTS FEDERATION IN SAUDI ARABIA

A princess has been named to head a Saudi multi-sports federation, in a first for women in the conservative Muslim kingdom where men dominate all sports, an official said Saturday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Princess Rima bint Bandar bin Sultan has become "the first woman to lead a federation" covering sporting activities for men and women.

In August 2016, the princess scored another first for women in Saudi Arabia when she was named by the cabinet to a senior post in the kingdom's equivalent of a sports ministry.

A daughter of a former Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Princess Rima is a graduate in museology from an American university.

Saudi Arabia does not allow women to practise sports in the public sphere and even the introduction of private sports centres for women has aroused criticism among religious conservatives in the Gulf state.

Although the kingdom announced it will lift a ban on women drivers from next June as part of a reform push, it still retains tight restrictions on women and imposes a strict segregation of the sexes.

Under the country's guardianship system, a male family member — normally the father, husband or brother — must grant permission for a woman's study, travel and other activities

Five HIV patients left ‘virus free’ after undergoing vaccine therapy. 26TH FEB 2017, Mitchell Warren, executive director of the Aids Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (Avac) in Barcelona, says a new vaccine has succeeded in suppressing the virus in five patients without the need for daily drugs. According to The Independent, Warren said the success was recorded when two innovative HIV vaccines were combined. The participants reportedly received a booster dose of one of the vaccines and a cancer drug called romidepsin, which has been shown to ‘flush out’ the HIV virus from tissues. It is said that the virus quickly returned and began to spread again in 10 of these patients, who resumed taking antiretroviral medication, but five of them have been free of the virus with no need to take daily drugs. Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an Anton Piller order, directing the seizure of a film titled "Okafor's Law" directed by Nollywood Producer, Omoni Oboli. The court also issued an interim order, suspending the release and launch of the film, in any movie theatre or cinema house on March 31, pending the determination of a motion on notice before the court. The judge ordered the seizure of all copies, materials, projections or infringing materials, relating to the subject matter. The orders followed an ex parte application filed by a company, Rancoteur Productions Ltd, on behalf of a Canada based script writer, Jude Idada. Idada lays claim to the film "Okafor's Law" as his intellectual property. Police officers The Ondo State Police Command says it had arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killing of two female students of the Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo state. The Public Relations Officer of the command, Femi Joseph, revealed that one of the suspects was arrested on Friday after participating in a robbery operation in Ondo town, while the other accomplices were arrested on Saturday. Victims It was gathered that the two students, Oladepo Blessing and Oluwasemilore Mary, had earlier been declared missing, while their whereabouts was unknown. According to the PPRO, the suspects are John Adenikiri, also known as Emir; Fisayo Fasanu, aka Abore; and a herbalist, Alfa Abdurafiu.
