FIVE MEN ALLEGEDLY GANG-RAPE LADY PUBLICLY

Five men have gang raped a 21-year-old woman on her way to work. The incident occurred around 5.30am at Irawo area of Owode Onirin, Ikorodu, Lagos.

She was seized on her way to the bus terminal and taken to a corner where the men took turns in raping her. PM Express reports that she reported the matter to her parents who notified the police.

Women deserve better

The police have arrested one of the suspects, 21-year-old Mathew Odunayo. He has been arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates Court for sexual assault and unlawful penetration. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The presiding magistrate, JA Abegun, adjourned the case till 19 May.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Bayelsa Photo: Twitter The Rivers state government has condemned the escape, from police custody, of Ifeanyi Dike, a suspected rapist and killer of Victory Chikanso, an eight-year-old girl. The Rivers state deputy governor, Dr Ipalibo Banigo, in a statement on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, asked the Police and other law enforcement agen­cies to ensure that the suspect is re-arrested and brought to justice without delay. She stressed that the report that the suspect es­caped from the hands of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) is "totally unaccept­able and very embarrass­ing." Banigo who condoled with the bereaved family on the gruesome murder of their daughter, said that "as a mother, I am still numb with shock to hear that a man could defile an eight-year-old girl and go ahead to mutilate her body for purported money rituals."
