BABU OWINO BECOMES THE LATEST POLITICIAN TO BE CHARGED WITH HATE SPEECH
- Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been arraigned in court for the offence of making utterances that caused a breach of peace
- Speaking in Dagoretti during a rally, Owino had made utterances that were taken to be demeaning to the presidency
- His speech which had gone viral saw a section of Kiambu and Thika road coming to a stop in protests that Owino had insulted President Uhuru Kenyatta
- His charge sheet, however, shows that the MP has been charged with offensive conduct contrary to section 94 (1) of the penal code
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was arraigned in court on Tuesday, September 26, after spending a night at the Pangani Police Station following his controversial remarks during a political rally in Nairobi.
Owino was charged with two counts of subversion and uttering abusive words against President Kenyatta.
The first time MP was charged with offensive conduct contrary to Section 94 (1) of the Penal Code.
Babu's controversial utterances were seen as lack of respect for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother.
The utterances sparked protests in Kiambu county where supporters of Uhuru demanded for his arrest and prosecution.
Babu refused to apologise, saying he did not mention Uhuru's name in his utterances.
He was condemned by a number of leaders among them Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris who apologised on behalf of Babu and Raila Odinga to Uhuru's mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
Babu becomes the latest high profile politician to be arraigned in court over hate speech. Others are Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama.
